Minutes of the 3rd ISOC-Bangladesh chapter general members meeting, 17 March 2001


Held at 7:00pm on 17 March 2001, at Sung palace, Mirpur road, Dhaka.

1. Chapter approved by ISOC HQ:-

Meeting started with a introductory speech from Chairman Hakikur Rahman informing the members about the official approval of ISOC Bangladesh Chapter by ISOC. Which also brings recognation for the internet users of the country from a international body also.

2. Membership drive:-

To increase the use of internet and to create awareness among the people about the use of internet is the main objective of this chapter, all members expressed their concern to increase the number of chapter member. Since the access to internet and email facilities are still not satisfactory and not all members have internet connection of their own yet, members suggested to setup open booths with computers and internet connection in some major public places in Dhaka city and to provide free email account to some users so that they can at least check their email from that places. As a trial process a booth can be setup immediately at ICMS college premises at Mirpur for the user of that territory.

Mrs. Shamima Rahman, Director (Administration) of ICMS Computer College agreed to offer one PC to be used as Linux server and to be connected to the SDNP Bangladesh server through UUCP connection and one PC to be used in email booth. A reasonable space for the booth will also be voluntarily donated by the ICMS.

3. Advisory committee:-

To run the chapter more efficiently members found that it is necessary to form an advisory committee immediately. The committee will be comprises of IT specialists as well as representatives from the Government, media, academic/research institutions, private sectors, NGOs, and Internet user. Several name of renowned personalities in this sector came instantly from members and they were duly noted by the Secretary. Name of the proposed members of the Advisory Committee will be placed at a meeting of the Executive Committee of ISOC Bangladesh Chapter and those personalities will be officially approached for the acceptance of membership for the Advisory Committee.

4. Amendment of Chapter By Laws:-

To allow the Bangladeshi citizens living abroad Chapter's organising Secretary requested to amend the chapter By laws clause 1.2 (Purpose) as follows: "This chapter will be comprised of Bangladeshi nationals who live or work in Bangladesh and abroad (and also could collaborate in similar activities in the Asian Region including the SAARC countries)".

The motion passed unanimously by voice vote and this ammended sub-section will be included in the Chapter's By Laws and will be posted in the web site.

5. Miscellaneous:-

a. Collection of fund-

To run various activities of the chapter smoothly it is important to collect necessary fund as early as possible. Collection of fund through membership, sponsorship from Business organisations, private entrepreneur etc.

b. UNESCO collaboration:-

To work in collaboration with UNESCO organising Secretary is requested to contact local UNESCO office to chalk out common fields where UNESCO and ISOC Bangladesh can work jointly..

c. Press release:-

It is requested to publish a press release to some prominent news papers announcing the recognition of ISOC Bangladesh chapter by the ISOC.

d. It is requested to open a bank account immediately and this decision should be approved by the meeting of the Executive Committee through a separate resolution.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from the Chairperson.
